How to read the result

The range widens as a symptom becomes less specific. A humming condenser that will not start points to a short list of inexpensive electrical parts, so the range is narrow. A system that runs constantly without cooling could be a dirty coil, a refrigerant leak, or a failing compressor, so the honest range spans an order of magnitude until measurement narrows it.

Multipliers reflect real cost behavior rather than markup. Older systems often need adjacent parts addressed at the same time, R-22 raises the cost of anything touching the sealed system, and attic access adds labor time to identical work. Those adjustments only apply where they genuinely affect the job — refrigerant type is ignored for repairs that never open the refrigerant circuit.

Use the range for planning and for evaluating a quote. If a quote falls far outside it, that is a reasonable prompt to ask what specifically was measured and why the repair is scoped the way it is. A good technician will welcome the question and answer it with numbers.

How accurate is this calculator?
It produces an informed range, not a quote. The calculator uses the same logic a technician applies mentally before arriving: certain symptoms point toward inexpensive electrical parts, others toward refrigerant circuit work, and factors like refrigerant type and access reliably move labor and material costs. What it cannot do is measure your system. A capacitor and a failing compressor can produce identical complaints from inside the house, and only instrument readings separate them. Use the range to set expectations and to sanity-check a quote you receive — not as a price commitment from anyone.
Why does system age change the estimate?
For two reasons. First, older systems commonly need adjacent parts replaced during the same visit, because components age together — a corroded contactor found during capacitor work, or a rusted drain pan discovered during coil service. Second, older equipment is more likely to use R-22, which raises the cost of anything touching the refrigerant circuit. Age also shifts the decision itself: the same repair that is clearly worthwhile on an eight-year-old system may not be on a seventeen-year-old one, because the remaining life you are buying is much shorter.
What if I don't know my refrigerant type?
Check the data plate on the outdoor unit — it is usually a metal or sticker label on the side of the cabinet, and it lists the refrigerant type along with model and serial numbers. R-410A appears on most systems manufactured after roughly 2010, and R-22 on older equipment. R-410A remains common in installed systems, while newer residential equipment is transitioning to lower-GWP refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32. If the label is unreadable, the model and serial numbers still let a technician determine the manufacture year and refrigerant. Knowing this before a repair conversation is genuinely useful, because it is one of the largest single factors in refrigerant-related repair cost.
